About the Instructor

Shumaila Hemani, Ph.D.

Shumaila Hemani, the former faculty member on Semester at Sea (Spring 2020 voyage), has guided learners at the Faculty of Extension, University of Alberta. Known for performing compelling stories from South Asian culture, her writings serve as a powerful beacon for self-advocacy and social justice. Her work has illuminated the pages of Canada’s National Observer, National Post, The Conversation, OCD 87 Recovery Diaries, Arts Desk (UK), and more. She has also been featured in the CEO Weekly, Mental Health Podcast Today, Hope and Resilience Blog, and more. Recipient of Women in Music Canda’s Honour Roll, Cultural Diversity Award, and Asian Studies Award in Music, Hemani is presently authoring a book for Routledge’s Human Rights series, weaving her research and cultural experience into affirmative action, advocacy for cultural workers at the margins of society.
