What does it mean to nurture environmental care and collaboration in times of climate crisis?

Deep listening circles aim to explore how alternative approaches to engaging with the environment—beyond extraction, exploitation, and economic gain—can shape sustainable energy futures. By focusing on care and collaboration, these circles seek to understand how diverse communities, particularly Indigenous and marginalized voices, can reclaim power in determining ecological outcomes.

The future of our environment and energy systems exists within a contested terrain, where dynamics of care, collaboration, and power operate on both local and global scales. As awareness of climate crises, indigenous land rights, and environmental justice movements grows, we must critically examine what it means to fight for sustainable environmental futures through the language and practice of care and collaboration. Additionally, it is crucial to consider whose values, practices, and relationships with the environment are privileged, and who or what gains power in this evolving landscape.

Let’s build a future where energy is accessible, equitable, and distributed with care.

Here's what energy stakeholders in Alberta have to say about the deep listening circles...

“I was amazed at the series of workshops by Shumaila Hemani. In my 22 years of experience in the climate field, I never have never had the opportunity to combine my background in film/photography/art with climate change. The work Shumaila is doing is incredibly innovative, and I think it touched a deep yearning among the participants to seek equity and justice in this world in which we are immersed. ”

Helen Corbett, CEO (All One Sky International)

“Shumaila is an excellent facilitator. She guies participants to tap into new ways of experiencing their surroundings through sound and listening, helping them come away with a new perspectives. ”

Stefanie Drozda, Program Officer (Alberta Ecotrust)
